Other diseases, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiv.ee\/hiv\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/hiv.ee\/elu-hivga\/hivga-seotud-haigused\/hepatiit\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hepatitis B<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and syphilis can affect your whole body.\u00a0Since STIs often progress without symptoms, you should consult a doctor if you have even the slightest reason for concern.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some infections are also spread through blood, skin-to-skin contact or from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding. Some STIs can be cured, others cannot. Undiagnosed and untreated STIs can lead to long-term discomfort and can have life-threatening consequences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unprotected sexual intercourse with an infected person is the most common way STIs are transmitted. People can become infected through vaginal, oral and anal sex. The inner surface of the human vagina, anus, urethra and mouth is covered with mucous membranes on which micro-organisms (bacteria, viruses, protozoa) that cause STIs live and reproduce.\u00a0<\/span><b>Please note that many birth control products, like contraceptive pills or patches, do not protect you from STIs!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During unprotected sexual intercourse, these infectious agents can spread from one person\u2019s mucous membranes to the other\u2019s. It makes no difference whether the sexual partners are of the opposite or the same sex \u2013 everyone is at risk of infection if they have unprotected sex.<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-6a74a64 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"6a74a64\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-d36c3e7\" data-id=\"d36c3e7\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3ab6273 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3ab6273\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><b>STI transmission<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">STIs are most commonly spread through <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hiv.ee\/kaitse-ennast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unprotected sexual intercourse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wound-transmitted infections can also spread by skin-to-skin contact.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hiv.ee\/elu-hivga\/hivga-seotud-haigused\/hepatiit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hepatitis C<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are transmitted by blood contact, for example by sharing needles.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most STIs can be passed from mother to child during pregnancy and childbirth, and may harm the baby. For example, a mother who is infected with gonorrhoea conjunctivitis can infect her newborn, leading to the child\u2019s loss of sight unless preventative treatment is provided. In Estonia, women are screened during pregnancy for syphilis, HIV and hepatitis B, as well as other STIs. If you have had unprotected sex or are pregnant, it is important to inform your doctor about any complaints you or your partner may have. Practise <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">safe sex<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and do not let your partner\u2019s semen, blood or vaginal fluids enter your body. The fewer sexual partners you have, the lower the chance of getting infected. In the case of some STIs, the symptoms come and go. Some STIs, most notably chlamydia and gonorrhoea, can progress without symptoms and therefore you may not be aware that you are infected! But even symptomless STIs can cause long-term health problems. Testing is the only way to find out if you are infected.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the disease will not go away on its own, timely medical treatment is essential.
